Director of Human Resources

Our firm has an exciting opportunity for an experienced and dedicated Human Resources Professional to join our leadership team. Reporting to the General Manager, the Director of Human Resources is the leadership role responsible for all support staff related HR initiatives, ensuring a positive and inclusive employee experience while achieving a highly efficient and productive team.

The Director of Human Resources is the go-to person for all staff related issues as well as managing activities related to HR strategy and policy, talent acquisition and retention, payroll & benefits administration, employee relations and performance management.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities: 
HR Strategy & Policy

  • Assists with or leads strategic initiatives to ensure our market competitiveness to align with the firm's business objectives;
  • Ensures the firm's compliance with all applicable legislation through policy creation, implementation, and training (e.g. ESA, OHRC, AODA, OHSA, etc.);
  • Creates the firm's talent driven initiatives and is responsible for the employee life cycle including attraction, recruitment, onboarding, professional development, retention and offboarding;
  • Creates and oversees the implementation of HR related policies and procedures to support all members of the firm;
  • Creates policies and guidelines with respect to employee relations and work life balance for a hybrid workplace for adoption by the firm's leadership;
  • Implements and develops internal processes and procedures to improve departmental staffing efficiencies;
  • Prepares monthly and year end reports to measure HR analytics and makes recommendations based on internal trends and KPI's; and
  • Develops and maintains a master compensation strategy for the firm, including: budget preparation, implementation of pay structures, designing salary grids, and participating in and analyzing industry salary surveys.

Talent Acquisition

  • Establishes relationships with Department Chairs and Managers in order to identify staffing, practice group, and department support needs;
  • Leads staff recruitment activities for the firm, attracting candidates, proactively building succession plans, and fostering relationships with agencies and educational institutions;
  • Develops and maintains internal referral program and leverages and grows internal talent sources;
  • Leads new hire onboarding and orientation processes to ensure new employees are integrated into the firm's culture; and
  • Leads all procedures relating to terminations & resignations including exit interviews with all outgoing employees, provides recommendations based on exit interview feedback, and implements strategies to ensure low turnover and high employee engagement and morale.

Payroll & Benefits Administration

  • Manages and maintains the firm's payroll system, oversees the bi-weekly payroll process, and produces reports as required;
  • Responsible for managing the firm's benefit program, including analyzing internal needs and industry trends, and making proposals for enhanced benefits, RRSP programs, and other offerings;
  • Oversees attendance management for all staff, including overseeing STD, LTD, vacation, and other leaves; and
  • Partners with the Director of Finance to ensure costs are being reported and billed accurately.

Employee Relations & Performance Management

  • Oversees staff performance management including administration of new hire probation and annual performance reviews;
  • Provides ongoing coaching to staff and managers to ensure achievement of annual and personal career goals with the firm, and provides proactive performance management, conflict resolution, and disciplinary action with employees;
  • Responsible for the development of job descriptions for all support staff positions in the firm ensuring compliance with the Pay Equity Act;
  • Leads and participates in the planning of wellness activities and support staff professional development initiatives;
  • Participates in our diversity & inclusion initiatives with the Director of Professional Development; and
  • Fosters a positive work environment by developing programs to enhance employee relations and offering employee support to each staff member. Develops ways to measure employee morale and determines methods for improving overall employee satisfaction.

Requirements:  

  • Solid understanding of all applicable legislation to ensure the firm's compliance and reduce our legal risk with respect to ESA, OHRC, OHSA, AODA, etc.;
  • Possess strong analytical skills with proven problem solving capabilities;
  • Conscientious and exceptional attention to detail with the ability to prioritize multiple demands;
  • Strong organizational, leadership, time management and team building skills,
  • Strong interpersonal skills displaying confidentiality and sensitivity when dealing with employee relations;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change and influence others in effecting change to achieve common objectives while inspiring trust and respect;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; and
  • Advanced user of Microsoft Office, viDesktop, Benefits Administration Portals, and Ceridian Dayforce Payroll Systems.

Preferred Experience and Education:

  • 10-15 years' of progressive levels of responsibility in human resources management roles with a minimum of 7 years preferably in a law firm, or professional services firm;
  • CHRL or CHRE designation required;
  • Human Resources or related management degree from a recognized university; and
  • Required experience in administering payroll, benefits, and compensation strategies

Senior Manager Corporate Services and Tax

Our firm has an immediate opening for a Senior Manager in our Corporate Services Department (CSD) and Tax Department.

This position is ideal for a current Senior Manager looking for a new opportunity to work with a great team. This position would be ideal for a Corporate Lawyer looking into transitioning their people and process management abilities in a new role.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the overall management of the Corporate & Tax Law Clerks, Assistants and all of their work-related tasks;
  • Provide ongoing feedback, coaching, and mentoring while motivating the teams, as well as ongoing training and skills assessment/development;
  • Responsible for staff scheduling, including: office rotations, approving employee vacations, monitoring overtime;
  • Performance management of work quality, personnel issues, workflow, and other concerns in an effective, timely manner;
  • Ensure service levels are being met, and coordinating all work flow; assessing staff availability, and monitoring of billable and non-billable hours on a regular basis;
  • Identify and implement opportunities to increase efficiency, and create strategies to boost productivity by assessing department practices, processes and precedents;
  • Maintain new and existing client relations, while providing exceptional customer service, including interacting with clients, answering client inquiries, and effectively handling client concerns in a timely manner;
  • Review and manage corporate/tax records and databases ensuring that these are maintained, up-to-date and used effectively;
  • May perform a variety of complex and more routine corporate legal duties as required;
  • Preparation of the following documents: Articles of Incorporation/Organization (including share provisions), Amalgamations, Amendments, Revivals, Dissolutions, Continuances, Extra Provincial Registrations;
  • Review and update minute books to rectify deficiencies;
  • Draft agreements and provide supporting documents relating to corporate and tax reorganizations;
  • Participate in departmental projects that focus on corporate software upgrades.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 10 years' previous experience working in a mid- to large law firm or equivalent experience with a solid focus on Corporate law;
  • A minimum of 5 years' leadership experience in management or supervisory positions;
  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) or equivalent law degree is an asset from an accredited law school;
  • Strong technical skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Calendar) and CorpLink and FastCo;
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and leadership skills;
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills;
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong client relationships;
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to work within time sensitive deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
